Cute ‘em Ups Display
The 2D Shooter was one of the earliest and most popular video games genres. 2D Shooters (also known as Shoot ’em Ups, Shmups, or STG) would become so popular that it would see hundreds and hundreds of games produced in the 80s and 90s, and a great deal of that production happened in Japan.
Many games featured a serious, even dark, tone based on war or science fiction themes. However, other games took a lighter, even at times silly, approach. These were often referred to as Cute ‘em Ups and featured vibrant colours, cute characters, parody, humour, and lots of fun.
Games for the Japanese PlayStation and PlayStation 2, the Japanese Saturn and Dreamcast, and the PC Engine will be featured; including some of the best known series of Cute ’em Ups, including: Parodius, Twin Bee, Cotton, and Twinkle Star Sprites.
